  • Dyno results...

Hey guys, I recently dynoed my car and was wondering if the numbers are where they should be for the minimal mods done. I was happy with them, but after reading a couple of threads on here, I think they are a little low.

On my best pull I netted 202/233 RW on a STD calculation. SAE it was 196/225. My mods are a 255FP, Straight pipe/no cat, and a K/N open element filter. I don't have my dyno files or I would post them. These were all on the high boost setting on the factory switch. It was 80degrees during the pulls.

    Thanks in advance!

That's not too shabby actually. Figuring 15% drivetrain loss a 86 would make around 175ish at the rear wheels 100% stock. So you probably picked up 15-20 rwhp with just a couple of simple bolt on mods. Not bad!

Sounds right, boost valve, your timing at 10, (maybe to 12 temped me again)and your up another 25hp. Do a little at a time and drive it a few days. Learn where the engine likes to stay at.

What was the A/F on it. That will tell you how safe you are and what you can do next.

My first run was 175 hp and lean!!14.2.!! Your ahead of the curve already.

I didn't run A/F on it since I was just getting a baseline. Once I start modding I will see what the A/F is before I start slapping everything on.

I know my curves were VERY spikey. I will post a graph once I get them from the shop. I thought it was plugs, so I changed em, gapped them at .032 and still had the spikes. The spikes were gone on the low boost setting, (as was all the power, Ha).

sounds like the knock sensor was pulling timing then...

            Good numbers for baseline.
I'll have to post my numbers once the car is back together =)

I dyno'd mine with almost the exact same configuation. 86 (also silver) with a K&N cone, 3" pipe w/cat, 255 fuel pump, 11 degrees base timing. I made 197/259 on my first pull. On the second and third pulls the torque dropped into the 230's, I presume because of heat soak and the knock sensor. The day I dynod it was 55 degrees out. Since you had 80 degree weather I would think you were right in the money.

I've since added a TC intercooler, bypass valve, and boost controller. I highly recommend the bypass, much smoother during shifts and throttle transitions. I raised the boost to 17/18 PSI and the car really started to wake up. I also use an octane booster to help keep detonation at bay. With the higher octane the car feels much smoother at full throttle. You could also try wrapping the knock sensor threads with a little teflon to reduce it's sensitivity.

I know this may sound silly, but did you have a fan blowing on the intercooler when the car was dynoed? Just curious.

Mine made 174hp/247ftlbs on 93 octane and 16psi.

Taking Mine to the Dyno Tomorrow

                    - I am taking my 86' to the Dyno tomorrow. Any suggestions to help make power?

                    - Spark plug suggestions?_______?

                    - Here is a list of my mods:

                    .030 over 2.3L
                    Ported head
                    Big Valves
                    Ranger roller cam
                    Cometic head gasket
                    Bob's log header
T3/T4 Turbo from Charlie at the "Evergreen Turbo Company"
                    Manual adjustable boost controller
Turbo Coupe intercooler w/ Volvo Bypass valve
                    K&N cone filter
                    Kirbin adjustable FPR
                    225 LPH intank pump
                    Adjustable Cam Sprocket
                    Spec stage II clutch

                    - I am sure I'm forgetting something.

                    - I have the timing set at 12 degrees and the cam retarded 5 degrees.

                    - I know a few things still need work. I am running a stock down pipe with cat, to staight pipes, to 2 1/2" tailpipes ( No Mufflers). I am also still running the stock throttle body and 35# injectors.

                    - Any guesses as to what the car will make for power? I am in San Diego right now. It has been nice and dry and averaging 65 degrees during the daytime.

                    - If all goes well I am gonna take the car to a local 1/8th mile track here on Friday night to see what it will do out there on street tires in street trim.

                    - Should I disconnect the knock sensor while the car is on the dyno?

                      No, I didn't use a fan.

I'll be very curious to see your results. Apart from the turbo and exhaust manifold, I have the same setup as you. How much boost are you going to run on the dyno?

Gonna start out with my daily driven 9-10 #'s of boost then I may turn it up to around 22-24 and if the numbers down lower are good. The Turbo will make 30#'s. This is the first time the car is going to the dyno. I'm not going to beat it extreemly hard.
Air/Fuel numbers are my biggest concern as well as getting the cam timing dialed in right.

A fan was blowing towards the intercooler.
