While relocating my alternator to the a/c location I found that my alt harness was semi melted. I really want to keep the stock alternator (for now) and the dual v-belt pullies (for sure). Can I just just cut out the plug and hard wire the alt to the rest of the harness? If so what guage wire should I use?

There is no reason you couldn't do what you mentioned. I would use a equal wire gauge but a larger gauge would indeed be preferred. I would highly suggest using solder and heat shrink tubing to make the connection.
The melting of the alternator wires and connector is a rather common occurance. Its been the source of more than one engine fire I'm sure.-Mike Malone (svoca #416)

Thanks CP86 that was helpful.
I do have another question. When you do the 3g upgrade is the external voltage regulator just left unpluged? Also does the convertion kit come with a plug that fits in the stock harness?

This should help a bit:
IIRC, someone does indeed make a plug in ext such that the factory regulator harness is used. Pretty sure you don't need it though.-Mike Malone (svoca #416)

I decided for now that i will run a new power wire from the selinoid to old alt and then extend the other wires. Ultimately I will upgrade to the 3G when my budget permits it

If you are going to the trouble of converting alternators, don't fool with the factory wiring. I just pulled it all out and ran new wires, especially since mine was melted at the inline plug just before the alternator itself. The wiring is much simpler and cleaner looking if you replace everything instead of trying to jumper the factory regulator plug.1986 1D - An oil return and rear end away from FINALLY being fully streetable again!

Not yet...thanks for the reminder though. I have a writeup on my laptop here at work that I've neglected to e-mail to myself back home to finish it up. Its pretty easy though. It is the exact same as the 3G but you don't have to mess with the stator jumper.1986 1D - An oil return and rear end away from FINALLY being fully streetable again!

Thanks
I would have never guessed that the 3g was so pricey. I would like to see if it changes from modle car to car or not.Originally posted by SVOericEric -- I've got a list around here somewhere of all the cars the 95 amp 3g came on -- I'll dig though, and try to post it later today, after some sleep.Confucius says" a closed mouth gathers no foot"
