  • J3 chip tuning/reading

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone know someone who is good at tuning j3 chips? I've got mine plugged in, but it seems like it is a bit rich at the bottom end. I got some old half faded(water logged) papers with the car, showing stock fuel map vs the j3 map, and it looked pretty raised. I was told that supposidly 'svojohn' did the j3 chip. Dunno if it is true. Most of the papers with the car looked like someone spilled a can of beer on them, while they were in a box. They are all faded to the point of illegible information.

I've seen like the readers/tuners on the internet but they look a bit pricey, and i have absolutely no clue where to even start down that road. I am moreso just curious to see what the mapping and adjustments looks like on the j3. That said, should I try and find someone who knows about 2.3T's, or just take it into any joe schmoe dyno place and see if they can read/print out the charts and other modified information?

Right now I just want to see where i am 'starting' at, so i can know if I ever want to adjust the tune, where would be a good direction to head.

i just got my moates j3 stuff in a week or two ago. running tunerpro, nice little program. all you need, is a burn1 ($85) and a F2A ($10) if its a moates J3 chip; i do not know if they can read / burn all j3 chips. you got a wideband? you'll also need some sort of datalog, to see where to tune, dataq makes a unit, the di-148, $56 shipped. 8 analog 0-20v, and 5 digital 0-5v inputs, 240hz sampling rate limited in software, but thats PLENTY of resolution for tuning a j3.

      ... i don't speak french.

No but seriously, i have no clue what you are talking about. That said, I was just wanting to find out how 'raised' the fuel loop is, and all the other stuff.

I am not wanting to get into tuning this, really. I would rather just learn one system, and go with standalone. That is down the line, i justwanted to see where all it is at, not try to improve upon it. I do not have a wideband or datalogger as of yet, either. Kind of trying to get her walking before sprinting.

no one can tell how 'raised' your fuel map is, without pulling the map off your j3 chip.

Eric, I was asking if I should look for someone who knows 2.3T's or could any joe schmoe dyno place do it?

I am not really looking to tune it right now, i just thought it felt a little rich at the bottom*slightly rough*, but there are a lot of other factors in this, aside from the fuel map.

nope, it has to be someone that has the proper equipment, I wouldn't expect a shop with a dyno to have one, unless they specialize in early Ford computers (pre 93).

Ah, well I know that 'burning chips' is something that is commonly done, but i didn't know if it would be common for all/any of the EEC-IV j3 chips, where i could just call around for local dyno's and find someone who could read them. Hmm.

I guess I can start calling around looking for a specialty shop then. Really hope it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg to get it read, if i can find a place to do it. shouldn't be too much, i would just imagine they plug it in, then use the tuning software to open it up and peak at the settings, then hit the print button. Thank's for helping clarify what i'll have to be asking for.

                    Yeah,

ask svojohn if he's the one that burned your J3. Go to the source man.

I definitely wouldn't take it to just any joe schmoe dyno place.
